Battle of the Bones: Dog Chews vs Dog Jerky

Battle of the Bones: Dog Chews vs Dog Jerky

Ask any professional dog trainer and he or she will agree: treats are an invaluable tool when training dogs. Whether you're teaching Fido how to sit, play fetch or go potty, treats allow you to train through positive reinforcement. When your dog obeys your command, you can reward him with a treat.

While there are dozens of different types of dog treats on the market, two of the most popular are dog chews vs dog jerky. So, what's the difference between them and which treat is best for your canine companion?

Dog Jerky Treats

Jerky treats are a great all-around choice for dogs. They are made using the same dehydration techniques as jerky that's made for human consumption. Meat such as beef, chicken, lamb and duck is cut into long strips, cured and dehydrated. By dehydrating the meat, it removes all of the moisture while subsequently increasing its shelf life. The finished product is a delicious, long-lasting jerky treat that all dogs are sure to love.

Aside from their delicious flavor, jerky treats may help your dog's teeth by removing plaque. The dry, hard texture works like a toothbrush, scraping away plaque as your dog chomps down on them.

Not all the jerky treats are made equal, however. Some companies use low-quality filler ingredients in their products, resulting in poor flavor and little-to-no nutritional value. When shopping for jerky treats, look at the ingredients to see what exactly it contains.

Dog Chews Treats

On the other hand, dog chews are designed to be, well, chewier than their jerky counterpart. Some dogs prefer the softer texture of chews over jerky. Small breeds like Chihuahuas and Yorkshire Terriers, for instance, may struggle with jerky. Because they are softer, however, this isn't a problem with chews.

Dog chews are also made with the same meat as jerky, though some are may of pork hide as well. Pork hide is a popular choice because of its mouthwatering flavor that dogs love.

The key difference between treats and chews is that the former is dry, whereas the latter is softer and chewier. Rather than choosing one or the other, offer both to your dog to see which treat he prefers.

As you can see, both jerky and chews are excellent dog treats, assuming you choose the right brand. Avoid low-quality treats that contain a plethora of hard-to-pronounce chemicals and additives, and instead buy your treats from a trusted and reputable vendor like Dog Treat House.
